PERSONAL INTERESTS

I am President of Georgina Cares.  This volunteer organization's mission is to help children living in Georgina to the age of 15 by funding extra-curricular activities or special needs on a short-term basis when their parents are temporarily unable to do so.  Over the years we have helped many children and their families.

Our major fundraising activity is the Annual Telethon held on Rogers Cable 10.  For 2006, our telethon raised almost $15,000!!  We appreciate your support of our telethon!  The 2007 version is Sunday, December 9th, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Rogers Television, Channel 10.

Georgina Minor Baseball Association

I first became involved with the GMBA when my son Ryan wanted to play in 1992. His team that year was not bad (and not good either). I thought the kids needed an involved coach...so I got involved.

I have served on the executive since 1993, and as Treasurer for the Association since 1994, and along the way have been its Head Umpire and Secretary as well.  The TDL Blue Jays players earned their share of trophies over the years: Season Champions & Grand Champions (1993); Consolation Champions (1994); Season Champions and Consolation Champions (1995), and "We did play, but didn't get far" (1996).

The Georgina Public Library Board

"Public Libraries are an integral part of the growth and development of our society. The right to read, and the right to access reading materials are a fundamental right for all citizens."

As Chair of the Georgina Public Library Board, I strongly believe the above thought. I am very proud Georgina runs one of the most efficient library services in Ontario. We have three outstanding branches, the Pefferlaw Library on Pete's Lane, the Peter Gzowski Branch located in the Sutton Multi-Use Facility (home of the Georgina Leisure Pool), and the Keswick Library at the Georgina Ice Palace.

RIXON MANOR

Named after the late Ernie Rixon, former Reeve of the Township of Georgina, and spearheaded by the Pefferlaw Lions Club, Rixon Manor is a senior's retirement complex located on Pete's Lane in Pefferlaw. This building is wonderfully managed by Barry and Glenys Emerson, and the operations are overseen by the Board. I was invited to serve on the Board of Rixon Manor by my friend and former Town Councillor, Edna Shepherd. Edna is the Chair of the Board (among a zillion other things she does). This is a great Board to work with. I believe we provide an excellent facility in which our seniors can reside. For information on Rixon Manor and available units, please call Barry or Glenys at 705-437-3811.

TOASTMASTERS

I joined Simcoe Shores Toastmasters Club - Number 704523 in early 2005.  In true "Paul" style, I started on the executive of the club as Vice-President of Public Relations shortly after joining, I am now the President of the club.

I continue to move myself along in the Toastmasters program.  I earned my Competent Toastmaster (CTM) designation in January of 2006, and my Competent Leader designation (CL) shortly after that.  I'm one speech away from my Advanced Toastmaster Bronze, and about 8 away from my Advanced Toastmaster Silver.  It is my plan to be a Distinguished Toastmaster by the end of 2008.

I have found Toastmasters to be wonderfully supportive and helpful to me improving my communication skills.  I've visited other clubs in my travels, and found them all to be the same - warm, friendly and inviting.  If you want to improve your speaking, listening, evaluation and leadership skills, why not come out and join us?

If you click on the PIX page, you'll see a number of pictures of me while doing my Toastmasters thing.

I also complied a bunch of pix from the 74th Annual Toastmasters International Conference held in Toronto August 23-27th, 2005.  I had a blast; met a bunch of famous people; and learned a lot.

Simcoe Shores Toastmasters meets the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month at Belhaven Hall on Warden.  These are our summer hours.  We'll be moving back to a weekly meeting in the fall.   All meetings start at 7:30 pm SHARP.  Come on out and join us.

OTHER GROUPS I'VE WORKED WITH...

The Town of Georgina

The Town of Georgina was born in 1973, during an early round of local government rationalization. It is comprised of the communities of Keswick, Sutton and Pefferlaw.

From 1994 to 1997, after years of working with local governments throughout the Province of Ontario (and indeed Canada), I wanted to make a contribution to my own Town by standing for Town Councilor for my area (Pefferlaw-Port Bolster-Udora).

I was elected, and thus started a three year term representing the best people I know. For anyone familiar with local politics in Ontario, you know 1994-1997 were tumultuous (in the least) as the Province tried to correct the sins of the past and create new, more efficient government operations. I guess this was true everywhere, not just here. With this make-over came a number of challenges our Council met with energy and vision.

I am truly proud of our Town. We have so much to offer. Why not come and visit Georgina on the Web at http://www.town.georgina.on.ca. Alternatively, and better still, why not come and visit Georgina in person!

The Red Barn Theatre

The Red Barn Theatre is Canada's Oldest Professional Summer Theatre, and is operated by the Lake Simcoe Arts Foundation. Its home is a 125 year old barn graciously donated by The Briars, and located in Jackson's Point, Ontario. But don't let the fact it's a BARN fool you! The Barn has been totally made over into one of the most unique and intimate theatre experiences you'll ever have! For the past 50+ years, this rustic setting has been the place to see some of the best live theatre entertainment in the world. I encourage you to visit Georgina and its communities and while here, make an evening out and take in this fabulous old theatre.

Canadian Ice Fishing Championships

I'm not much of an angler. However, I work with a great bunch of people on this committee. First prize in the 2006 CIFC will be $10,000! It's a two-day event with fishing in deep, shallow and mid depths. Anglers fish for Trout, Perch, Whitefish, Crappie, Dogfish and whatever else they can land. It is Canada's pre-eminent live release championship. If you're any kind of serious angler, you'll want to participate! Come and visit at Canadian Ice Fishing Championship Home Page.

Pefferlaw Lions Community Centre

One of the nice things about being an elected person in the Town of Georgina is I get work with fine groups of people like those on the Pefferlaw Lions Community Centre Hall Board. In 1996, in a group project with the Pefferlaw Lions, Lioness and the community at large, we renovated the Pefferlaw Hall to include air conditioning, improve the accoustics, and give the front facade of the building a much-needed facelift. This Hall is now the most beautiful one in the Town. It also has the advantage of being the largest facility for miles around. If you'd like information on the Hall, simply click the picture!
